Book Club!

Today was the start of a brand new session for the year 2’s – Book Club!  Each Thursday, the students will get into small groups and share with each other what books they are reading at home.  It is the opportunity for the students to share their thoughts and ideas on literature, saying why they are drawn to certain books and maybe make some recommendations for others.

We are hoping to feature a different group each week, sharing a snippet of the conversation with the parents.  This week, 2JB – Jen’s group is being featured!

Raf started off the discussion, telling the group how he read ‘Just Disgusting’ this week.  He told us it was written by Andy Griffiths.  He liked the story because it was disgusting – lots of stuff about poo’s in there!  Gross!

Jen asked if anyone had read any other books by Andy Griffiths? Jackson said that he had been reading ‘The 39 Story Treehouse’. He particularly liked the level that had the chocolate waterfall in it. The group counted by 13’s to get each of the book titles – 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78.  Edie remembered that there was a section in one of the books about Terry and Andy taking over the job of some monkey’s.  Chanon liked the anti-gravity chamber.  Edward is reading the 26 Story Treehouse – he thinks it is hilarious. Edie seems to think that the next book – the 91st – will be out in August.

What other funny books do people like? Jimmy is reading ‘Weirdo’ by Ahn Do.  He particularly likes the dads super sized nose! Fynn read another book by Ahn Do – ‘Hot Dog’.  The stories are adventures of a lizard, a cat and a dog.  Weird combination!

Hamish and Thomas.V are both reading ‘Captain Underpants’.  Hamish thinks it is funny that the boy keeps getting in trouble.  But everything turns out okay in the end.

Atticus told his about the Tin Tin books that he was reading – he started reeling off all of the names of the Tin Tin books! He loved the pictures and stories.  Jen asked him what type of stories they were and Atticus said they were detective stories. Jen asked if anyone else had read detective stories.  Yvette told us that she was reading Friday Barnes.  Friday is a girl detective, who is similar to Sherlock Holmes.  They are stories full of adventure.

Ruben mentioned that he was reading an adventure story – The Midnight Gang by David Walliams.  The whole group erupted at excitement over David Walliams! The Midnight Gang, Boy in the Dress, Billionaire Boy, Gangsta Granny, Awful Aunty, Ratburger.  Phoebe was reading The Boy in the Dress. The books are quirky Jen said.  Jen asked if the group could think of another author similar to David Walliams. Edie jumped in with Roald Dahl.  She said that they were ‘as if’ type books – as in ‘as if that could really happen!’ Hugo and Sophie were both reading the BFG at home. We thought about the illustrations in both David Walliams and Roald Dahl books – Quentin Blake!

Next week, 2MD will be discussing their books – stay tuned!
