Week 2 Learning Update

Last week, students participated in a number of literacy workshops that focused on descriptive language. They began to explore adjectives through writing, reading, and drawing as a way of adding detail to describe the features of a particular place, as well as to express and develop ideas. Students also looked at ‘text to self’ connections, and had the opportunity to practice this comprehension strategy with a book of their choice during Projects and Provocations. The vocabulary relating to ‘How do we connect to places?’ that was identified through a whole class discussion last week was further explored through the creation of ‘Wordles’, which are on display in the Art Studio.

In Maths, students looked at giving instructions and following directions to move from one place to another. These skills were further developed during a Trust Game in which students lead their partner, whose eyes were closed, through the school grounds. Students also practiced their understanding of place value and skip counting through a range of activities during Projects and Provocations.

Students had the opportunity to use Google Maps during Projects and Provocations to locate and investigate special places around the world. Most students were very interested in finding their home and the homes of their friends, and navigating around their local neighbourhood using the ‘Street View’ capability of Google Maps.
