Editing Checklist

Students were introduced to a new editing checklist on Friday, which they will be encouraged to use when completing written work in the learning commons. Small groups were taken into our target room and students were involved in discussing how editing can be a useful tool when completing tasks.

The editing checklist has a list of simple steps that the students will follow BEFORE they call the teacher over for conferencing.  See below for a copy of the checklist – if you would like a copy, simply click on the photo and it will download as a pdf.

Students were given detailed explanation into the bottom two sections of the checklist.  ‘Do your words look correct?‘ – means have you spelt the words correctly, underline them if you don’t think they look right.  Have you also made sure that there are no upper case letters when their shouldn’t be.  ‘Does your writing make sense?‘ – when you reread your work, do you understand what you have written?  Will the teacher conferencing with you be able to read your work without too much difficulty? Editing is a great skill, that the students of the grade one neighbourhood will be working on for the rest of the year.  Below is an example of the sentence we edited together in our target session
