This term, the Year 2 Neighbourhood will be going on two excursions!
In Week 8, on Wednesday 27th November, we will visiting Royal Park to participate in an environmental education program run by the City of Melbourne. The program is being held at the Australian Native Garden at Royal Park, and over a whole day the students will be learning from the City of Melbourne rangers about birds, macroinvertebrates, wetland wildlife and mammals. the session is a hands-on opportunity for the students to engage with the natural environment and better understand what we can all do to live more sustainably. We will be walking there from school in the morning after the roll.
In Week 10, on Friday 13th December, we will take a trip back to the State Library, to visit the new ‘Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter’ at the State Library. The space has been renovated as part of the library’s ‘Vision 2020’ project and opens on 5th December 2019. It will be an amazing space, designed with a two-level storybook castle, reading nooks, a makerspace, a running track and a brand new browsing children’s book collection. After previously visiting the space in Term 3, it is intended that this experience will develop students’ understanding of how designed environments can enhance literacy and stimulate a love of reading. Students will be partaking in a self-guided tour of the different areas in small groups. We will be catching the tram into the city, and staying to eat our lunch after visiting the library.
We will be requiring a number of parent volunteers to travel with us and help out on both excursion days, so please get in touch with Meredith, Kate, or Warrick if you are available and keen to come along! Parent volunteers will need to have a Working With Children check/card, that has been sighted by the Year 2 teachers and submitted to Julie at the office for her to keep on record prior to nominating themselves as a volunteer for the excursions.
