Following the iSea iCare workshops headed by the year-5 leaders this term, regarding pollution through plastics that affect sea creatures, the preps have created an experiment together looking at degradation of materials. We put in different materials such as a metal, paper, plastic and organic matter in soil to see what happens over time. The preps began last week by making predictions of what changes they may see in 1 week, 1 month and 1 year.
Today, after a week or so, the preps re-examined these materials to see whether any change had occurred. We began by discussing what good scientists do; and made sure that we observed closely through our senses and recorded accurately our observations. We found that some materials had changed it’s colour, smell and touch while other materials showed no change at all. We recorded all this in our inquiry book, and tried to label as much information as we can and put the materials in a continuum of change.
