What characteristics or motivations inspire people to continue…
This week we welcomed our Artists in Residence, and also extended our thinking, discussing what types of characteristics people have to face disasters or catastrophes and then continue to face a new day and keep going. As a result of our discussions, we began to unpack other motivations or reasons that enable people to find inner strength. Our discussions draw from examples we saw after the summer bushfires, how people survived global conflicts, refugees, and of course the experiences surrounding our current pandemic.

This week we are interviewing other people from our community to explore various perspectives of ‘heroes’.
English & Inquiry-The beginning of A Hero’s Journey
How would you define a ‘hero’?
“People have different ideas about heroes and who they are, such as Trump-some people think Trump is so cool, yet most of us do not. I am thinking that a hero is someone who listens well and takes on ideas from others” -Olin
“In my opinion, a hero doesn’t have to be human, for example, there are some dogs that are trained to find people in avalanches and save people from drowning; but who are the real heroes? The people training the dogs? The people with the dogs? Or the dogs themselves?”-Marta
“A hero is someone who goes out of their way to help others” Ada
“A superhero doesn’t have to have powers, but they do have to have to take a risk like Adam Goodes-he leads others to look up to him” Harry
“Heroes are not necessarily people who have superpowers, they can be people such as doctors, or police or anyone else who takes risks and puts people before themselves” Kitty
“A hero is someone who makes change and helps or inspires people to be who they want to be, such as Cathy Freeman or Malala” Chloe
Book Week: Curious Creatures, Wild Minds
The 5/6 Team dressed as Little Miss…or Mr. Men characters and many of the students engaged in the celebration dressing up as characters from their biographies, or favourite narratives.
“The highlight of book week was definitely the parade…” Yvette and Aleksandar
“Seeing all the little kids and the other grades’ costumes was my highlight…” Kitty
Last week, we also enjoyed the addition of many new titles in our neighbourhood thanks to our Library Fund. The perfect way to celebrate Book Week!
Review of Laptops
This week saw us reconsider why we have laptops and review how we use them at school. This week may be a helpful time to reconsider family expectations around tech use, given your children are not working remotely this term and the sun is shining!
Congratulations
Congratulations to Donna Stolzenberg of the Homeless Collective, who was one of our guest speakers in Term 3. She has been nominated for the Australian of the Year 2021!
