This term has looked a little (a lot!) different for the Kitchen Garden Program within the Year 3/4 Neighbourhoods, but it has certainly given all of us the opportunity to explore our own personal kitchen and garden spaces, and share our skills and experience with each other through Google Classroom.
Some highlights of this term have included our special ‘Kitchen Garden Day’, cooking recipes at home and sharing our experiences through collaborative slideshows, and making connections with our Geography learning and projects by starting to inquire into ‘What does handmade mean?’ and explore the many and varied kinds of handmade foods from different places around the world. A huge thank you to parents, carers and families for their input and involvement in our weekly provocations and recipe testing!
Two examples of recipe provocations over last few weeks include inviting students to make crepes with their families and suggest different fillings and toppings, and to design and create an ‘ultimate sandwich’. Students responded in a variety of ways to share their thinking and learning, for example through drawing, writing, and making videos.
Another wonderful experience this term was our special ‘Kitchen Garden Day’ in Week 5, where we took a break from the ‘(new) normal’ of remote learning and came together through Google Classroom and Webex to enjoy a range of Kitchen Garden themed learning experiences. Students learned about the maths involved in cooking food in Commercial Kitchens and created a menu item, calculating their expenditure and profit!
Exploring addition, multiplication, and division by creating vegetable (and fruit) boxes.
Students shared recipes that they cook at home with our ‘ingredient of the week’.
