Learning Focus – Week 9!

We would like to start this post by acknowledging how fantastic last week’s Harmony theme was. As the students engaged in many different conversations and activities throughout the week, it was amazing to hear and see the kids’ perspectives on how important harmony and diversity meant to them. Not to mention those who dressed in the many home/background cultures for last Thursday’s Harmony Day – they all looked brilliant! Well done to all! These same conversations will continue into this week and until the end of the term and hopefully encouraged throughout the year! This Friday the whole school will come together for a ‘Harmony’ based assembly starting from 9:05am so do make sure not to miss this exciting display of work from all the kids!

Comprehension within big books, reading books, guided reading groups and one on one conferencing is going to be a big focus for this week in literacy. Questioning the text, about the text, within the text, about the author’s choices are many areas that students will be working towards within their reading skills. We will also look closely at their editing skills, with a close focus on spelling – how do we edit? How do I know when to spell-check? How do I spell a word? Where can I look to find out the correct spelling? These can be questions you can ask the kids at home as many may or may not know.

Whilst we continue on with our exciting Autumn Leaf Maths Project, our next step here will be on measurement. Students will be tracing their leaves and measuring the areas and perimeters on squared paper and why it’s important to understand these mathematical terms. They will also be experiencing how to measure with a ruler using ‘cm.’ Here, we will be measuring the width and height of their leaves.

Project Groups have be in full flight the last couple of weeks and some of the work that’s come out has been very impressive to say the least! Animation films have begun to come together with background effects and noises, story writing’s planning using storyboarding and story mountains is well underway and puppetry character creations have moved onto the phase of constructing sets for their plays/stories.

We’ve had many parents come in over the last week ask their kids to share their project work, so the more the merrier! We will continue to encourage the students to invite you in as much as possible in sharing their amazing work with you!

WHOLE School Assembly next Friday 29th starting @9:05am in Gym:

(This Friday 29th March our school will be celebrating Harmony Week at a special whole school assembly in the gym at 9am. Students (and guests) are invited to wear orange (the official colour of Harmony Week) or a national costume. Please join us to celebrate our school’s cultural diversity!)
