Firstly, a big thank you to those parents and students who participated in last week’s Family Maths night. It was fantastic to see a huge turn out and celebrate the many different mathematical concepts the neighbourhoods had on offer. It was also amazing to see the community come together, work/play and take their learning experiences back home.
Maths Inquiry cont.
Continuing on from last week’s Maths Inquiry, the students will be investigating the specific shapes – both 2D and 3D that are found in meeting places. Using the Railway House we visited last week as a guide, students will identify the different types of shapes that go into designing and planning of the building. By using special squared paper, we will be able to carefully measure these shapes (1m=1cm) using a ruler of the Railway House and then finally illustrating their own chosen meeting place. We will also look at maps of our local area, learning about their features and discussing scale as we find meeting places around Carlton and Melbourne.
NAPLAN Preparation
The year 3 students have been busy preparing for the upcoming NAPLAN tests in week 5. Since the beginning of the term, we have set out a series of hands on activities that strongly relate to NAPLAN-based questions. The students here are required not only to explain what the questions are asking them, but explaining their answers inside of their maths book. The year 4 students are also expected to participate and complete these questions.
Scientific Poster Opportunity
Students will have the opportunity to become scientists themselves! Here, they will use catergorisation to learn more about animals in different environments. They will firstly research and create a presentation about an animal of their own choice, then create a scientific drawing of the animal and its characteristics. During this process, students will be identifying the different parts of an animals biology and match these characteristics.
Carlton Football Club Open Training Session
This Friday, the students will be walking to Ikon Park where they will be able to go see an open training session of the Carlton Football Club. Here, their focus will be around how the club itself is organised as one group. But the students will be taking notes on the many groups that will be on display, the values or rules they follow during the training session as well as noting how the group functions effectively. The training session will begin at 10:30am.
How People Communicate
One of our last workshop opportunities for the week is breaking down how people effectively communicate within their groups. As part of our inquiry at the moment, the students are in the middle of understanding the functions and operations of how groups work and operate – communication will be displayed as an essential part of a group. Examples of effective group communication may be through one to one conversing, online communicating or by phone.
Mothers Day Stall
Lastly, this Friday morning there will be our annual mothers day stall held in the gym. If your child is interested in purchasing anything from the stall, please don’t forget to provide them some cash. There will be a 20-minute opportunity in the morning then another at lunchtime.
