To begin Harmony Week, we began by discussing the theme, Everyone Belongs.
We asked the children what they know about harmony and belonging.
“You can enjoy the culture you’re in and it’s a special week for everyone who grew up in a different country.” Isabel
“Harmony is a bunch of people together… in orange.” Frankie
“Harmony week is where people share about their families and their cultures and where they were born.” Elliot
Together, we talked about how everyone is different and asked the children to think about what we can do to make people feel they belong.
“You can invite other people to play. If you want to play by yourself and someone wants to play with you, you might not be friends but you can still play together.” Gabriel
“If people are not nice to you, if you make friends with them they will be.” Arlo
Some children responded through drawing.
Children shared their thinking behind their drawings…
“This is all of us at the playground. We’re playing together.” Zoltin
“This is what the Aboriginal sunset looks like. That’s the Aboriginal people. That’s the white people.” Hattie
“It’s me and Junie holding hands.” Louis.
“Two kids are showing respect to other kids. They are being nice and they grow up all together.” Patrick
This is how I want the white people to be nice to the Aboriginal people, so it makes the land a little bit more better. Ronan
“This is Bianca crying and I’ve come to help her.” Coco
“This is me and my family at home playing together.” Bianca
“No-body should feel left out.” Goldie.
“These are my friends. We all belong together.” April
“Those are the blue people. They are sad because the sky people are about to destroy the tree.” Yi Di.
“Those are two girls who are being mean to that little kid. She feels sad because they are being mean to her.” Jemimah
We are looking forward to our Harmony Day Assembly on Friday where the prep neighbourhood will perform a cultural dance to acknowledge Harmony Week.
