Building on our exploration of personal artefacts, we made connections with Reconciliation Week by reading ‘Welcome to Country’ by Aunty Joy Murphy. The book explains the significance of welcoming ceremonies to First Nation communities in Australia and their connection to the natural world around them. Reading the story, the children commented that the people in the story took only what they needed and used natural materials in the construction of their homes, tools and clothing. We decided that these cultural objects were special and important, but just as important were the living things that surrounded them. Collectively, we created a collage representing the sky, land, and water; bringing together all the special living things we find in nature.
