What does it mean to us to live and learn in Australia?
We know lots about Australia, it is our home! – Billy
As we have come back together for term 2, the year 1 community was inspired by some holiday travels of some year 1’s. This led to our year 1 inquiry turn towards our understanding of place, particularly Australia and the many rich cultures and many perspectives that shape our country. We have been exploring the question What does Australia mean to us? And through provocations, we have been using our senses to help communicate our thinking.
There are many special animals in Australia like koalas, emus and kangaroos. This is special because other places don’t have them. – Emily
One perspective we have been exploring is the many ways we communicate here, and the many languages our community uses to connect. We have been thinking about Italian and also the many other languages are spoken by our year 1 community.
We have also been learning about Indigenous perspectives of place, learning things like the Woi wurrung seasons observed in the last two weeks through the weather and plants at Princes Hill Primary.
Some of us can speak different languages, I speak English and Chinese when I speak to my mum. – Kai Ling
Our thinking now turns to the questions we have and, like scientists, the year 1 children are seeking to learn facts through observation, research and experiences this term.
