Welcome to the ¾ NH2 blog post for Week 6: How can camp help us learn more about ourselves as a community?
As you know, camp is coming up next week and lots of people are very excited about it. We are going to Camp Weekaway on Monday for 3 days and 2 nights. Reminder to all families to pack over the weekend. It will take us just over an hour to get there.
The teachers have told us about our cabins and activity groups and lots of people are happy because they are looking forward to staying with their friends.
We will be doing a bushwalk day on Tuesday with all of the activity groups. The other activities will be mountain biking, rogaining, a ropes course and yabbying. We are also going to go on a big flying fox.
Some people have also been working on a quiz that we can do at camp. There are 3 categories with 5 questions in each, adding up to 15 questions in total.
Because we will be doing new things and spending more time with children that we’re not as close with, we hope that this experience will help us become stronger as a community. It’s better if we’re in cabins with people that we don’t know because we can learn about each other, what our interests are and what each other is good at. When you’re in a cabin or activity group with someone you don’t know, you might want to talk to someone new and be with them. You will make more friends and be more social with different people.
We are also thinking about trying new activities such as the flying fox and how we might support each other. If you are experienced with something and enjoyed it, you could say to one of your friends who’s a bit nervous that it’s really fun and say all the positive things about it. Aurelian suggests that if anyone’s nervous about doing something at camp, to remember that it’s safe at camp. You can also say to your friend ‘you’re going to be okay, it’s going to be fun and you don’t know until you have a shot’. If you decide not to try, you won’t know if it will be fun or not. Alina says that you can’t always expect the worst in life or you’ll miss out on things that are fun. We are going to say supportive comments such as:
- (new food) Lucinda: Oh, this is really great!
- (new food) Hattie: I’ve tried this before, and this is what I think about it.
- (new food) Coco: It may look bad but it’s really good.
- (sleeping away from home) Ivy Belle: It’s okay, you’re safe. If anything happens there’s a teacher right near us.
- (sleeping away from home) Alina: Don’t worry, you’re surrounded by your friends and everything will be really great. I know you’re not at home, but this is a great place.
- (sleeping away from home) Hattie: Just imagine that we’re on a really fun sleepover!
We’re looking forward to sharing with you how we went as a community in our next blog post. Look out for it in 2 weeks time!
