Over the past two weeks, as a Neighbourhood we have been focussed on portraiture as a way to tell a story. Portraits tell a story by showing what the subject is feeling (Zoe). You can tell by the background what the subject did in their life (Hattie). For example, if the background is words or animals it can show that the subject likes writing or animals (Sotir). Portraits also show what the artist thinks about the subject and what they like about them (Evie M). You can find out someone’s story by interacting with them, asking how they are feeling or what zone they are in and trying to incorporate that in the portrait (Zoe). You also add in facial details and show what made them feel that way (Gigi). When you paint somebody, draw somebody or even take a picture of somebody, you need to ask the person. Each time they might have a different emotion (Owen P). Portraits also show when and where someone lived because of what they wear. In the past, rich people would have their portrait taken (Owen P).
Some children have created portraits of people in our immediate or global community. They have explored how colour might show what the subject was feeling.
Mia: Green can show that someone is happy. It can also mean life. When you go outside, green things are living.
Flynn: Blue can be nervous or low energy.
Sotir: Green can also show that you’re calm and relaxed.
Hattie: Yellow can show that you’re in a sunny mood or energetic.
David: Green can show that you’re high on energy.
Mia: Red shows that you might be angry or frustrated with someone.
Makaila: The subject might have a favourite colour.
Alina: Green could represent that they love nature or that they live in a country that has lots of landscapes.
Ayshe: Green could mean that they really like seeing things in nature because it makes them feel happy.
E: Another way you can use colours is that colour can change your mood. If you have dark blue all around you with quiet music, it can make you feel calm. If you have red, it can make you feel so many different emotions. Pink can make you feel calm.

David is a new friend and a new student. I chose to do David with a Miami Heat t-shirt because we both love basketball and I feel that we have a connection.
His Dad is also a professional basketball player in the NBA.

“We were inspired by the background of the portrait ‘Scream’. The background is wavy colours that are all a bit smudged” (Siri and Coco).
