This year, our inquiry is helping us better understand ideas of wellbeing, community and inclusion. Learning about the power of ‘yet’ connects to our inquiry because if our community embraces the power of ‘yet’, we can work together to have a growth mindset. If we are trying to do something that we can’t do yet, we can work together to get it done.- Ayshe.
We know that over the last couple of years, the global community has faced a huge challenge with COVID-19. If we had had a fixed mindset during this time, we may have never developed any vaccines or tests. We would have given up and far more people would have gotten sick.
Some of the ways we have shown a growth mindset as a community are:
Evie H- when people got COVID, their community helped out by giving groceries or leaving little things to help pass the time while you’re in isolation.
Alina- We made sure that we’re isolating while we have COVID and making sure that we wear masks if we are a close contact.
Ayshe- Even if someone didn’t have COVID but they were just very sick, people sometimes have sent care packages for people at home.
Owen P- Doctors encouraged people to get a vaccination to help other people around us. I also saw on ads some people just got their jab and they said ‘this is for me and everybody around me’.
Ada- Our neighbours over the road have been sick so we baked them a fruit loaf to help them feel better and also gave them rapid antigen tests.
What is a growth mindset?
A growth mindset is when something is hard and you push on and do it. The opposite of that is a fixed mindset. That’s when it’s challenging and you just don’t want to do it. – Owen P
A growth mindset is basically seeking challenge. You believe that you might succeed and even if you don’t, you try again and slowly get smarter over time. You build stronger neural connections in your brain- Lucinda
A growth mindset is when you don’t give up– Seb
What is the “power of yet”?
One time, Carol Dweck went to a high school and the students had to pass a test to graduate from high school. If you fail, you would get the grade ‘not yet’. This means they get a second chance. – Max
Adding onto Max, the ‘not yet’ grade gives you motivation to keep on trying. If you were given a ‘fail’ grade you would probably just give up and think you’ll never be able to do it.- Sotir
Adding onto Max, it means they are on a learning curve. – Mia
If you can’t do something, instead of someone saying “you can’t do that, you’re dumb.” They say “you can’t do it yet, you might be able to do it in the future”- Milo
Sharing things with the neighbourhood can be challenging. It doesn’t mean I’ll never be able to do it. This is an example of the power of yet. I will keep trying- Jack
How does a growth mindset and the “power of yet” impact us and our community?
Evie M: When you have a growth mindset, you work better with other people because if you make a mistake, you can just think together ‘we can just do it again and work together’.
Annie: It’s kind of like a maze. You can either work together and try to get out, or you give up. You might go back the way you came in or work together and think of where you might go. You could split up or make a plan.
Mia: A growth mindset can build a better connection with your family and friends. If you have a growth mindset, you are positive with people around you if they can’t do something. You encourage them.
