A community of collaboration and sharing

Collaborating and sharing with our community Gabe

As we move towards the end of Term 1, the 5/6 Neighbourhood continues to thrive. Not only have we had many exciting events happening but the students are continuing to deepen their understanding of “Community” through some exciting Inquiry workshops.

This fortnight, the school community gathered to review the learning from the last couple of weeks as part of the school’s Welcome Expo. All Neighbourhoods across the school were open for questions, and examination of learning and inquiry. It was incredible to welcome members of our school community into the Neighbourhood for the night!

Another exciting event took place yesterday when the 5/6 students took part in the Cross Country alongside students from Year 3 and 4. Race by race, students ran, jogged and walked around princes park with determination to win. But, no matter what place each peer came in, they all shared respect and looked after each other.

As we continue delving deeper into our Inquiry, many students are enthusiastic about creating a collaborative community newspaper. This will encourage people of the community to engage with each other. While numerous students are working on their own newspapers in small groups, the goal is to create one grand magazine for the whole of the community created by all members in the Neighbourhood.

Recently, students have been working on a project that includes creating a fictional nature fun park for their community. But that doesn’t mean they don’t put in the effort of making it worth it. The project incorporates a range of Mathematics concepts including budgets, perimeters, equations, prices, as well as an environmental focus as students are required to incorporate environmentally friendly and sustainable practices to benefit their community. On top of that figuring out what features to include, such as a cafe, ticket booth, a maze, picnic tables, and much, much more. We look forward to seeing how the students choose to bring their Community Nature Fun Parks to life!

A highlight of the week for both teachers and students with the 5/6 community is our Neighbourhood sharing time. Each week students are encouraged to present their learning to other students to show what they have been working on. Not only is it a fantastic opportunity for students to practice their speaking and listening skills in a group setting but students are encouraged to provide the presenters with valuable comments and feedback that they can take with them into future projects!

We look forward to the final weeks of a fabulous Term 1. With lots of exciting things planned, we look forward to sharing more of the teaching and learning that occurs and as always we thank you for your continued support for our community!
