Writing an essay

What is a community?

In our inquiry, we are exploring our place in the world, and what it means to belong to a community. Is being part of a community important? Why?

Students can write their own essays, on which communities they belong to.

The first step will be to make a list of communities that they belong to.

Use their ideas to plan essay.

  1. Use three ideas for the introduction.
  2. Use three ideas to write 3 paragraphs for each idea.
  3. Summarise ideas in the conclusion.

Once you have finished your draft use the following checklist to make sure you have reread, revised and edited your writing.

Maths

In maths this week, we are continuing to learn about place value and partitioning numbers, or breaking them up into their parts of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands to help us with our calculations.

Attempt the following problems:

The focus is on how we can use our mathematical thinking to make a start on the problem. Can you use drawing or modelling with objects to help with responding to the problem?

Next, students can write their own worded problems and solve them, to practise each of the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Example: In 2016, 4918 households in Brunswick had one car. How many wheels would there be in total?

Additionally, students can choose problems from this page to help them practise their work on Place Value https://nrich.maths.org/13786

Inquiry / Projects and Provocations

Students are continuing their investigations into Lunar New Year and other cultural celebrations, and recording their findings. We are also responding to the provocation ‘Which cultural celebrations do I take part in, and how does my family celebrate these occasions?’

Additionally, students are looking at World Maps, and the Indigenous map of Australia and recording any questions that they have after looking at those maps. Following that, we are using the internet to research and record answers to those questions.
