Science Week

This week, National Science Week provoked the Year 2 Neighbourhood to consider the prevalence of science in our lives, learning, thinking and futures. Year 2 children also conducted some experiments, which introduced them to scientific language and processes.

When we think about the issues of the future we think about science because no one knows what going is to happen so we have made predictions based on what we know. -Aaliyah

Year 2 children have previously identified that problem solving, nature and technology are important threads in any thinking about the future. Science Week has provoked a realisation that much of this thinking is embedded in scientific thinking. Documentation shows that children understand that science grounds plenty of the processes and thinking they carry out as learners, researchers and inquirers into the Future of Our World.

On Wednesday, children conducted experiments testing the effect of temperature on honey, and the sturdiness of different paper cup arrangements. Through these experiences, children developed an understanding of scientific language and processes such as testing, constant and variable, hypothesis, observation and conclusion.

We use science for the Indigenous Garden when we test things that we researched. -Alice

Throughout the week, children have begun to set up experiments that help to survey and test different ideas for the Indigenous Garden. Furthermore, many are including science as a top priority in future school timetables as they continue to consider the future of education.
