Vive Le Football!
As we wind up another busy (interrupted) term, we finished with our focus turning to soccer! At the beginning of the year, we asked the students to put forward their most intended sport/activity – soccer was the most popular. Therefore, the last two weeks post remote learning, we’ve been looking into and discussing the topics of the football sport – why is it the world’s most popular sport? What are the rules that are different to Aussie rules or rugby? What is the current Euro soccer competition about exactly? The students have also been briefly inquiring into the training and diets of professional soccer players and, in turn, comparing those to their own. It also gave them the opportunity to reflect the similarities and differences of their own ‘healthy self’ when discussing and researching professional athletes’ lifestyles and how they maintain their fitness.
The physical skills that were involved with soccer included the three fundamental movements and techniques – passing/kicking/controlling the ball, header passes and striking for goal. We also discovered that both foot-and-eye coordination and balance was just as pivotal. Working in pairs and small groups, students closely practiced these skills for the first week. Then, in our final week, we put these skills to the test by playing in a mini home-group soccer game.
Looking back at our time in Term 2, there were plenty of highlights from all year levels. The younger years continued to experience new games, participate in team-based sports as well as working towards supporting each other win, lose or draw.
The middle years HPE highlights included a number of focused team sports – which enabled them to participate positively in groups as well as negotiate roles and responsibilities. Other highlights would be those that participated in District Cross Country and District/Division/Regional Swimming.
Finally, the senior school also celebrated their main highlight of this term’s interschool sports. Although we didn’t participate as much as we’d hoped due to weather and remote learning, the students had thoroughly enjoyed the experiences – particularly when playing alongside their friends. Again, other highlights would be the students who participated in Cross Country and Swimming Competitions. Here’s hoping the remainder of the year we don’t get any further interruptions!
