We began the new term celebrating NAIDOC week and listening and drawing to the music of Gunditjamara (Kirrae Whurrong/ Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, songman & storyteller, Archie Roach AC AM.

Students explored how they might capture the spirit and message of Archie Roach’s song Let Love Rule through expressive and abstract mark making and collaboration.

A special journey Archie Roach’s song took us on, with the spirit and compassion of the song flowing into our hearts, through our bodies, down to our hands and through our drawing tools onto the paper.  Using soft pastels the children worked intuitively, letting lines, form and marks unfold naturally, smudge, sing and disappear. Some children enjoyed sharing and swapping drawings throughout the song, moving harmoniously and thoughtfully in their interactions.  Others closed their eyes allowing the materials to move freely and rhythmically and to push their drawings forward. Many thanks to the children for sharing their process, such a joy and privilege to watch and be a part of this experience.

Art can heal us. Thank you Archie Roach.
