3/4 Neighbourhood Blog Week 9

November 23, 2023 by years34

Over the last fortnight, the 3/4N have worked on creating mathematical games, linking to our inquiry on play!

Some students chose to use their knowledge of ‘Scratch’ when creating a digital game while others chose to create a more traditional board game. Students have thought about the mathematical strategies that would be needed to answer their questions.

A range of both digital and board games will be displayed at the upcoming Expo in the Neighbourhood.

The children have shared and tested their games with their peers to receive feedback and improve their game design. When giving feedback, the children were asked to consider how the games might not only ‘test’ computation skills but also encourage the use of strategies and problem solving.

Flynn introduced his Scratch Maths game testing shape and multiplication fact recall. Some of the feedback he received was to include all 4 operations and use a timer. Siri suggested that if you get it wrong, you get a clue or more information.

Leo C and Rohan shared their boardgame ‘Adventure of Maths’. The aim of the game is to defeat bosses by doing 2 equations in a row. They had a very clear procedure for their rules, and explained all important rules. The game includes options on each tile for different operations (eg. subtraction or multiplication). Boss answers must be shared with the gamemaster. The children really enjoyed playing the game and their feedback was to add some colour to the board. Other children suggested that too much colour can be overwhelming for some people and preferred the natural tones of the cardboard.

Frances and Nina shared and tested their boardgame ‘Written Rush’. Frances explained the rules very clearly with all important information. Some of the children’s suggestions were to add little notebooks to write answers and to assign someone to keep track of the points.

We look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming Learning Expo and sharing the brilliant work from the 3/4 neighbourhood this year.
