Year 3/4 Neighbourhood Blog Term 1 Week 2

Welcome to the 3/4 Neighbourhood blog for 2023. This first post will give you an insight into the first couple of weeks of this term and will set the scene for our inquiry journey.

For the first 5-6 weeks of this term, our inquiry is beginning with the Welcome Project. Our shared goals for this project are as follows:

  • Children understand the purpose and opportunities of each space. They know where to find resources.
  • Children make friends with each other and treat each other with respect.
  • Children understand the behaviours and characteristics that make others feel welcome in a new space.
  • Children understand and follow expected routines.
  • Children can articulate the school values: One community, expanding possibilities, strong and capable children.
  • Students feel a sense of ownership of the learning spaces in our neighbourhood and display this by taking care of furniture and resources.

Students began this project by investigating the New Metrics capabilities for Deep Learners.

The majority of children brainstormed ways to show:

  • Showing respect
  • Taking responsibility
  • Being Flexible
  • Being Creative

We have chosen to use these 4 capabilities when giving feedback to the children, especially in line with setting our expectations for the neighbourhood.

Students have explored each of the learning spaces and experimented with available materials. Initial provocations allowed for this.

Some key projects have been:

  • Storywriting
  • Collecting living things from outside (tubers- what are these? Flowers- singing bowl)
  • Experimenting with clay and different paints
  • Bridge and tower building
  • Writing rules for gameboards
  • Creating maps for new fantasy worlds

Over these past two weeks we have seen the children taking care of each other, collaborating in respectful ways and allowing their creativity and sense of play/imagination to guide their projects. We are looking forward to getting to know each other more as the term progresses and sharing our discoveries with you all.
