Term 3 Week 2 – What Makes a Great Film?
This week, the children of 1/2N2 have been exploring the question “What makes a great film?”. This is the next step for our inquiry as we draw on excitement and prior knowledge of how to create films to share messages and stories. In order for the children to build an understanding of filmmaking and how it can be used to tell stories, first the neighbourhood must identify and qualify the elements of great filmmaking.
Through a workshop and a number of provocations, children began to think about all the films they encountered, breaking the experiences down into their parts. We then worked to identify how making a good film could be made, drawing on real-life experiences such as videos and interviews with authors and filmmakers, reviewing our documentation of our artist-in-residence program and categorising and discussing films we all know and love.
We have also been exploring some elements of the film, such as script writing and acting, our performance space sure is a hive of actions and emotions this week! It is wonderful to see the whole neighbourhood engage, each person bringing their own ideas and perspectives, just like the collaboration used to create great films!
