5/6 Talking Point Term 2 Week 6
Last week, the 5/6 Neighborhood had the pleasure of hosting their first exhibition for the year. All teachers and students from across the school were invited to come along to see what the senior students had been busy working on over the past few weeks!
Since Term 1, students have been working hard on their Nature Fun Park unit which formed part of our Economics and Business curriculum. Students were given a budget of $1 million dollars, a plot of land and a few key parameters with which they needed to design their park. Students needed to keep an environmental focus when designing their park and were encouraged to include sustainable features and practices such as installing a vegetable garden for the cafe or using recycled materials to create their playgrounds or park benches.
The students have thoroughly enjoyed the creative nature of this unit as well as the cross-curriculum opportunity it presented as it encompassed Mathematics, English, Visual Art and Digital Technology curriculum content. Throughout the unit, students developed their mathematics skills as they managed their parks budgets. Additionally, students were required to consolidate their knowledge of area and perimeter as they designed their fun park in order to make sure everything fit and was to scale! They fine tuned their writing and public speaking skills as they drafted an oral presentation. The area of digital technology was a highlight for most students as they spent time creating visual representations of their park on innovative digital design platforms such as Tinkercad and Minecraft.
After weeks of hard work and dedication, it was finally time to hold the Nature Fun Park exhibition and the invitation was sent out across the school. It was time for the students to showcase their knowledge to the community!
We got to show off our learning to the school – Matilda HG
Students from Prep through to Year ¾ as well as staff took turns to visit the ⅚ Neighbourhood. Visitors were welcomed at the door and encouraged to walk around the exhibition that was set up through each of the learning spaces. Each student or group that was presenting had their own booth which displayed their Nature Fun Park. This included their poster, map of their world, and budgeting spreadsheets. Visitors were able to view and engage with each of the booths and listen to an oral presentation prepared by the 56 students which explained their learning. Following each presentation, the visitors were invited to provide feedback to each of the groups by filling out a feedback form.
A lot of people gave us good feedback – Eliza
Following the exhibition, students reflected on the success of the event and noted how enjoyable it was to have other students and teachers coming through to talk about and engage with their wonderful learning. We hope to have more opportunities to host exhibitions in the future and hopefully we can open the invitation to the wider PHPS community.
