We are all part of a community…

After a great start to the school year, students have well and truly hit the ground running in the 5/6 Neighbourhood with plenty of wonderful learning, sharing and collaborating happening. Student learning continues to be facilitated through workshops and provocations that link to our Inquiry concept of “Community”.

Our Maths workshops have kicked off this year with great success! Students have engaged in a number of problem-solving workshops and targets that involve them working in small groups to researching strategies that can help them with their Math investigations. Students have been encouraged to share their strategies with others through presentations which aim to create a “5/6 Community of Problem Solvers”.

Community etiquette with the hope to produce a collaborative guide for manners and etiquette that can be shared within the school community. We began looking at the history of manners and etiquette and how it has evolved and been adapted over time across different cultures. This has led students to consider how they can work together to create their own community guide to share more kindness and respect within the Neighbourhood. Students have begun collaborating on a range of posters, stories, plays and videos that share their ideas.

Students participated in a workshop focusing on exploring manners and etiquette from an Indigeous perspective. We learnt about Aboriginal lore and customs that were laid down in the Dreaming and passed through generations and generations via entrusted individuals referred to as Knowledge Keepers. This exploration led to an exciting provocation of creating a totem in the Art Studio. In Aboriginal culture, totems play a key role in each individual’s spirituality, providing a rich history of their personal and spiritual journey. Students were invited to create their own totem which told their own personal story. First, students drew their totems, before moving on to creating actual models with clay and other materials. Students’ totems are now on display in the Neighbourhood.

Swimming fever has officially hit the 5/6 neighbourhood with the PHPS swimming carnival and intensive swimming programs all happening within the last fortnight. Students had a fantastic day at the Fitzroy Swimming Pool cheering on their fellow house members. Those that made it through to the District Swimming Carnival headed off to the pool again for another hot day of swimming with Toni and Sherwin. Well done to all of the swimming superstars on their efforts!

The 5/6 teaching team are super excited with the incredible ideas students have been developing and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the term brings. We appreciate your continued support for our 5/6 community within our school and wider school community.
