Welcome all to term 3. Neighborhood 1 has hit the ground running, and is already very busy with an ambitious suite of goals for this term.
Our inquiry is re-focusing on sustainability. We are relating our previous inquiry into systems, both natural and human, into how human systems and processes such as consumerism, energy use and unequal consumption are impacting on the biosphere. Are we being responsible global citizens in our individual and community actions? What rights and responsibilities do we have, if we are to be effective contributors to a sustainable, fair and enjoyable future?
Our activity in projects and provocations and workshops in the first weeks of term 3 will be very focused on preparing the neighbourhood so that we have the skills and tools to begin to answer this question. A focus in mathematics will be number and place value, as we will be considering very large numbers when looking at global issues. We are finalising our shops inquiry by completing an analysis of our businesses: were they sustainable? Were they profitable? Would we want to run our own business in the real world?
We have begun to think about our classroom and school, and have been discussing “how sustainable is it?” We are looking at classroom practices and the building itself – how could we be more sustainable in it? What changes could we make? What if we were starting from scratch, what could we do? We are hoping to move from an information and ideas collecting phase into an active creation stage, where we can begin incorporating our ideas into designs for a better, more sustainable classroom and school.
