NAIDOC Week and Growth Mindsets

Last term we said farewell to Sia and thanked her for being a part of our neighbourhood, and this term we have said welcome to Matt. We are grateful to have Matt with us and he is looking forward to continuing to get to know the wonderful students in our neighbourhood.

As part of NAIDOC week celebrations, we have been learning about Indigenous changemakers. Each student has selected someone to research, reflected on which aspects of their life inspire them and has created a portrait of the person. Additionally, students have been exploring the biography text type, and this week have been compiling research which will support them to write a biography of the Indigenous Australian they have chosen.

In Maths, we started the term by exploring probability, practising describing the likelihood of different events, and articulating when the occurrence of one event would prevent another from happening.

As part of our Social and Emotional Learning, an important focus area has been the concept of having a Growth Mindset. According to Stanford Professor Carole Dweck, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” We will continue this term by exploring how adding the word ‘yet’ to the end of our sentences can impact the way we feel and learn in very positive ways, for example by saying ‘I don’t know how to solve this type of maths problem yet‘.

Welcome back to all of our students and we congratulate you on your efforts to start the term showing positive attitudes and respect for one another!
