Our Place in the World

Welcome to all the children and families Neighbourhood 1 3/4!

We have all been very excited to start the new year at school and the children have been incredibly eager to start learning.

As part of our inquiry we are exploring Our Place in the World. We are beginning to make links through our cultural, social and family connections. Students have been identifying our place in the world through location and the historical significance of our past and present.

We have looked at maps as a starting point to examine our geographical connections. This has included shared exploration of maps of the world, Australia and an Indigenous map of Australia. Using the Thinking Routine, Bridge 3,2,1 (3 words, 2 questions and 1 simile), children have generated questions that they would like to explore. Some of the questions include:

‘How are maps made? What things do they use to make a map?’

‘How did they make maps in the olden days? How do they make Google Maps?’

‘How old is the map of Indigenous Australia?  When was it made?’

‘What is a tribe?’

‘What is a community?’

‘What is the largest Indigenous tribe in the world?’

During Projects and Provocation and workshops, children have been exploring and making maps, exploring other cultural celebrations, for example, the recent celebration of Lunar New Year and getting to know each other.

As part of getting to know each other children have written profiles and drawn self-portraits.  We have also been establishing Our Rights and Responsibilities in our neighbourhood through student discussions, workshops and consultation.
