Year 1 have been working hard on preparing for the Welcome and Learning Expo this past fortnight and as many of you witnessed it was a huge success! Children in year 1 were so proud to show their special people around our neighbourhood and showcase the amazing inquiring that we have been doing so far this term.

“I liked showing my Mum my book at the expo, her favourite page was my drawing of a spider.” Rhys
“I liked building my spinning top and showing it to my Dad.” Patrick
“I think my Mum and Dad liked all 3 of my books.” Spencer
”My Mum and Dad liked mine and Veda’s and Izzy’s. They loved the bedrooms and dining room and the play room.” Vivienne
“My Mum and Dad liked my comic because it was really funny.” Veda
Our inquiry into insect communities, life bubbles and ecosystems is still going strong. In writing we have worked to develop our ability to use adjectives to make our writing more interesting with our insect transformation pieces. We turned bugs into animations through adjectives and complex sentences as well as detailed decorations. We have continued to construct homes for our bugs and insects using blocks, Lego or paper. The bug homes that we have created in Year 1 are amazing. Some have libraries, play rooms and dining rooms. We have also created comics and mini-books about the adventures our bugs take and the experiences they enjoy.
In numeracy the neighbourhood have been building their math toolboxes by unpacking numbers and looking at them from different angles and perspectives. In number talks the children have shared their existing knowledge and built upon what they noticed when reflecting on a number. We have done several surveys into the yards and gardens of the school to collect data on our insect populations and have created graphs to represent these.
In STEM we have been learning how to use the bee bots, programming a journey for them through a maze of things leading them, eventually, to the bee hive. The Year 1s have also looked into the distinction between living and non-living things and worked on leaf rubbings and spider webs using water colours.
In wellbeing the children looked at their own special super powers to think about their strengths. They then teamed up with a peer to collaboratively solve a problem using their combined super powers. In addition to all this, we have also been preparing for Harmony Day by practicing our song, Asalaam Aleikhum
