Making Visible, the Invisible
This week, we used paint to apply colour to our collaborative pieces. Many students felt colour was an amazing way to investigate emotions, especially when they had more than one emotion drifting in and out of their minds simultaneously. They used colours to define these emotions. Their banners were a symbolic expression of their collective emotions. Themes emerged from a range of sources, however the connection with nature was a prevailing and consistent, theme explored. Students combined their connection with nature and their love of colour as a means of emotional expression onto enhance and build on the message that they created as a part of this collaborative panel.
Through the collaborative process of discussion, drawing and painting students became aware of those around them. They were required to question and understand each other’s work. They discussed and made decisions collectively. The results were overwhelmingly powerful. Through their artwork, students were able to understand themselves and each other and communicate their thoughts and feelings about their own world and the world around them. This exercise has built their understanding of each other and their ability to empathize.
“The role of art is to give food for thought, to act as a stimulant, to entice the onlooker to inspect things, people, emotions, from a new point of view.”
