Mini Olympics Unit!
Let the games begin!!!
Welcome back to Term 3 where we found ourselves back at school for almost a week and fall into remote learning once again. As some of you may have found out, this term we have begun our new mini Olympics unit. In connection to the Tokyo Olympics – as well as our very own Athletics Carnival fast approaching (Week 5) – the next 4 weeks will have a strong focus on the students’ building their fitness and participating in a series of Olympic sports!
The first week had a running and jumping theme. The Year’s 2 – 6 all participated in a beep test where they identified not only how fit they felt being the first week back at school, but also provided an excellent opportunity to set themselves a new personal goal the next time we hold the beep test again in week 4. After recovering from the intense running test, students then engaged in number of jumping events which included long jump, triple jump, hurdles and high jump. Some of these sports events will be included in our upcoming Athletics Carnival – more details of this to come in compass.
The junior students had a similar session where we started with a shuttle run – ‘elimination run’ where students run from one point of the gym to the other with the last runner being eliminated. Continuing with the jumping theme, students were involved with a series of fun activities such as mini hurdles, long jump and high jump (but without the pole). Just like the senior students, the junior students will also have their own mini athletics event which will be held at school – more details of this will follow soon.
The students are very excited to see what events are next within their sports sessions. Let’s hope restrictions don’t last for too long so the kids can get back to building their fitness for their upcoming respective athletic carnivals!
Unfortunately, we found ourselves in remote learning once again for week 2. A provocation the students were required to complete via Seesaw was to continue building their fitness towards our athletics carnival. This could be an activity they find at home from running, using sports equipment, conditioning or practicing any of the athletics sports. Here are some of the highlights from this week…
And to finish with some celebrating news, three of our running superstars have made it to Regional Cross Country! Sophie Mason (Yr. 6), Ada Connolly (Yr. 6) and Maggie McLeod (Yr. 4) all finished in the top 12 against other schools in the division. Congratulations girls! We wish you all the very best in Regionals which hopefully will go ahead over the next couple of weeks. I’d also like to acknowledge the other sensational runners on the day or students who made it to division – a huge well done to Raff Widmer, Poppy Taylor, Kitty Cochran Perfect and Eva Choi-Staughton!
