The Olympic excitement has spread to the prep neighbourhood this fortnight and many children are eager to share their knowledge of what they have seen overnight or a favourite sport they have watched. We used this excitement during provocations, and had printouts of countries from around the world that are attending the Olympics, along with their capital city and their flag. We now have an amazing display of flags in the neighbourhood and a list of many more they wish to make!
Our data representation also had an Olympic touch to it this week, with many students asking about their favourite sport as their ‘yes or no’ question for gathering data.
“Do you like watching rock climbing?”; “Did you watch the swimming on the weekend?”; “Do you like the Olympics?” They are doing a wonderful job of getting the information they need, before making a graph and representing their data.
A group of students were keen to use the recycled (and washed plastic) that we collected last term, and reuse it to make accessories! They used string, and wire to thread their selected plastic, and create necklaces, earrings, key-rings, and headbands. They were very proud of these creations, and some lucky family members have some beautiful accessories to look forward to when they get taken home – enjoy!
We have continued to learn about earthworms and are now imagining what their make-believe habitats could look like. Children have created fantastical underground lairs fitted out with all manner of modern amenities such as toilets, kitchens, and inground pools. At the same time, we’ve read information texts that outline the steps and materials required to create a functioning worm farm inside the classroom. From this, we were able to create a diagram and label the parts required for building a working worm farm. If you’ve got some spare 2L containers (milk, fizzy-drink, etc.) please send them in so we can start construction!
In the coming weeks we will delve deeper into the wet and wiggly world of earthworms by creating our own indoor habitats for these amazing creatures. We’ll look at ways we can use data collection to answer important questions about the world around us, and find new ways of representing our findings visually through graphs and tables.
What a creative Prep neighbourhood!! A busy couple of weeks indeed! Keep up the great work Preps and thanks as always Robert and Connie
It’s been our pleasure! Thanks for the positivity!
