Week 5 in the Year 1 Neighbourhood

This week we have noticed that the children are connecting emotionally and intellectually to our inquiry and displaying positive behaviours in relation to our school values and rights and responsibilities. They are becoming increasingly familiar with our daily routines and the resources within each space and the “how” and “why” we use them. They have been displaying qualities that show us that they are strong and capable children – making deep connections with their exploration of artist Keith Haring with Hannah in art and bringing their understandings back to their work in provocations. This came through with a discussion with a child who, when asked to share his mapping design, explained “My design has lots of lines and colours like Keith Haring.”  We are also noticing an exchange of learning from school to home, with children building on their understanding of “welcome” through writing and illustrating books at home and bringing them into school to share with the neighbourhood.

Through our shop design provocation, we have discussed size and dimensions. This led us to exploring measurement in maths, where the children began their exploration by measuring each other. We have also been building on their understanding of addition and subtraction through the exploration of Friends of Ten – with the children using unifix cubes to explore how many different ways they can make 10. The children have really run with this concept and have been excited to make numbers well beyond 100!

We were very lucky to have Kiko’s mum, Kei, visit the neighbourhood this week to develop the children’s skills  in origami.  The children were extremely engaged by her visit and we are very grateful to Kei for coming into the neighbourhood to share her amazing skills with the children.

The children have had many authentic writing experiences though provocations and have been developing their writing/handwriting skills through a range of teaching/learning experiences.
