Maths Learning Focus

Over the next few weeks, the students in the year 2 neighbourhood are going to be focussing their maths investigations on money.

Students will broaden their understandings of how maths is used in every day life and be able to the apply skills they will develop during these investigations.

The main focus of learning will be developing the skills of

  • Being able to add small collections of Australian notes and coins
  • Identifying equivalent values in collections of coins or notes, such as two five-cent coins having the same value as one 10-cent coin
  • Showing money values in various ways
  • Correctly counting out change to 5c

Students will participate in various targets and workshops that will focus on developing these skills and then be set “maths investigations” during project and provocation time to practice and consolidate their learning.

Below are examples of the investigations that the students are encouraged to undertake during project and provocation time. During the course of the week, Jen, Meredith and Tim will conference with the students to see the progress they are making with the tasks and to identify any misunderstandings that may arise.

Today the students were encouraged to dive in and try some of the investigations that were set out.  The students were keen to get started on the $100 word challenge! The challenge to find a word that equals exactly $100 was exciting.  Jimmy managed to get to $97 and referred to himself as 97 for the rest of the afternoon!

Whilst these investigations were happening, some students participated in target groups, where they got to play a fun game of “I have, who has” money edition.  Students were challenged to find the total amount of change on their game card, which then directed the next student to find the total on their game card.  Two versions of the game were played,  click on the pictures below to download and print a copy of the games at home.
