Literacy assessment at PHPS

We continually monitor and track the progress of individual students.

Throughout the year teachers:

  • systematically collect evidence from a range of assessments, monitor and analyse this information over time
  • schedule and document ongoing assessment to track individual students against Victorian Curriculum English Achievement Standards or EAL standards and progression profiles
  • administer and analyse the following assessment tools (aligned to the PHPS assessment schedule):

– English Online Interview

– Single Word Spelling Test (SWST)

– PAT Reading

  • administer and analyse Diagnostic Assessment Tools in English as required
  • administer and analyse running records (Fountas & Pinnell) for all students at regular intervals. Running records are used to record a student’s reading behaviour and comprehension while a student is reading
  • regularly observe students reading, writing, speaking and listening within the class context, and document progress
  • regularly collect and analyse student writing samples
  • provide students with regular opportunities for self-assessment of literacy progress using agreed criteria

At the end of each semester teachers:

  • Integrate evidence collected throughout the semester to make on balance judgements against Victorian Curriculum English Achievement Standards for the Report
