An eventful week in 5/6
This term, a lot is happening. Over the past few weeks, we have been working a lot on our inquiry into growth. Some of the forms of growth we have been working on are personal and historical evolutionary just to name a few.
We have also been working on group projects. We got into mixed groups after learning about genetics and drew a character using the Punnett square which is a way to identify dominant and recessive alleles. With the Historical Growth we have been working on some Australian Historical Moments, working in teams to research things like the Australian Gold Rush, Captain Cook’s Arrival, the Holey Dollar, World War II, and more.
We have been doing quick maths nearly every morning which is really helpful for us to work on our mathematical thinking. For a while some of us felt that we weren’t doing much of it but now we can confidently say that we are improving.
We’ve also been exploring some new provocations, such as:
-Family Tree: Where we looked at our ancestors to create an authentic family tree.
– Hydraulics and Pneumatics: We researched hydraulics and pneumatics and used our knowledge to make a diagram of a machine that could use this technology.
-Great Debates: Preparing a debate about an invention that is controversial in some way.
This term has seen us embark upon a new passion project. This is really nice because we get to find out more about something we are genuinely interested in. It’s great to see what our peers are doing for their project because we feel it brings us together and lets us become closer when we know more about their interests.
Recently, we’ve been doing weekly check-ins which help us with responses and are a good way to have the teachers know what’s going on and to say things students wouldn’t usually be brave enough to say in real life. This is helpful for us children because it is sometimes daunting to explain feelings to people who are older than you.
Last term we had cross country and coming up is district. We’ve just had the walkathon and inter-school sport is coming up next week, so there is lots to look forward to. We are very excited to see what the rest of the term will bring!
