Term 3, Week 8: Getting into the flow of our final projects

Over the last two weeks, the 5/6 Neighbourhood have continued to work in project groups to deepen their understanding and think of ways to create a product that reflects our inquiry into legacy, leadership change and impact.

Repeated request from last blog: Community expertise and resources are invaluable to our inquiry projects! We encourage any members of the school community to let us know if you think you can help out, especially with:

  • Public Art group: Experience with mosaicing and/or any relevant supplies that could be rehomed please!
  • Forever group: We have been particularly drawn to looking at infinite in ‘very big and very small’. We’d love the opportunity to learn from anyone who works in a field that engages with concepts of scale and magnitude. We’d also be extremely grateful if anyone has a scientific microscope they’d be willing to loan or donate!

The iseaicare students attended their Litter Catchment excursion to learn about the type of litter that enters Port Phillip Bay and how it affects its health. They will be incorporating this information into their peer teaching of the younger students.

PHPS News

The students have now found their flow in working independently to create their weekly episodes. They are refining their interviewing skills, video and sound editing and final production skills. We hope to launch the episodes to the rest of the school, soon!

Public Art- Mosaic Friendship Bench

The students in this group have completed their research into the materials we will need to create the mosaic bench and we are looking into an incursion to learn the skill of mosaic from an expert. Students in the Materials and Construction team calculated an estimate of the number of 2cm x 2xm tiles to purchase to cover the surface area of the bench. The entire group then participated in a workshop to prove/disprove this initial calculation. The students in the Research and Planning team have compiled a survey for the whole school to consult on the images, symbols and words that people feel best reflect friendship, wellbeing and respect. The Community and Outreach team have ahd their proposal for the project funding approach and are now hard at work planning a launch event to unveil the bench to the wider school community.

What is Forever?

The students have now developed a number of discrete projects. They have been learning how to extend and then present their learning. Students looking at ‘very small’ have continued their research about the history and are creating their own slides for the optical microscopes. Another group is researching what it would look like for humans to live on another planet. The final group is looking at significant events in the history of the universe. The focus is now on combining the practical and the theoretical.

Home group and small group targets: Next Steps
