Students have been eagerly watching and requesting to watch ‘Secrets of the museum’ on ABC. After watching the fourth episode during lunch time we asked the children a series of questions:-
Why is it important to preserve objects in a museum?
What does preserve mean? (Preserve = keep, bring back to life, to keep safe from injury, harm, or destruction, to protect, to keep intact, or free from decay)
The students as a whole came up with the following statement:-
Preserving objects is like looking into a window in time. It tells us about an artifact, who owned it and what that person was like. It is a way of seeing what life was like in the past and something to save for other generations. It is a way of sharing and showing history to help people learn and know about these artifacts by preserving the past and keeping the memories and stories of that object. To pass down to the next generations and to keep a culture alive. We can study and investigate objects from the past in the future and find out information.
Online and at school we have asked children to further ask the following questions of themselves.
What object of yours would you like to preserve for the future?
Why would you like this object to be preserved? Why is it important to you?
Here some of their responses:-
