Lewis and Karl have written this week’s blog post. In their article they have included a brief recap of the Swimming Carnival and shared a few examples of learning experiences in the Year 4 Neighbourhood from the week. Their work was then reviewed and edited by the other students and teachers of the Year 4 Neighbourhood with a focus on adding detail and word choice.
This week the Year 4 Neighbourhood went to the PHPS Swimming Carnival on Monday. Most of the children swam and the rest chanted passionately. The Swimming Carnival was held at the Coburg Olympic Swimming Pool and some of the students made it to District. The Year 4s tried their hardest and had a fantastic day at the Swimming Carnival.
Another highlight of the week was arriving at the end of our Inquiry Research Project that we have been working on over the past few weeks. To start their inquiry research, students had to create a question that interested them (that was an open question). Afterwards they had to use their research skills to find out more about that question and then draft, edit, and present their information digitally or make a poster of their research.
On Tuesday students shared their work with a small group of peers. One person shared their project and then the others gave feedback on a slip of paper, thinking about both the content of their project (for example interesting facts and information, including diagrams and illustrations, and evidence of editing) and their delivery (clear oral presentation).
Students have also had alot of fun sharing and playing their multiplication maths games that they invented during Remote Learning.
One of the provocations this week has been the thinking routine ‘Step Inside’ for ‘The One And Only Ivan’, a novel we have been very much enjoying during serial reading. The idea of the provocation was to help the students to develop their understanding of the character. The ‘Step Inside’ thinking routine allows us get to know the characters in a narrative more deeply.
Over the past few weeks students have been allocated to a Literacy Group (in groups of 4 or 5) and together they chose a book from the library to read. Each week students read a chapter and then complete a task that helps students to deepen their comprehension and understanding of their text.
Last week we wrote poems that were based on an analogy our neighbourhood had written earlier in the year about nature. Poetry is another form of expression to share our thinking and our feelings. This week we worked on an artwork for our poem. It could be made out of paint, watercolours, tissue paper, or coloured pens or pencils. We can’t wait to share our poetry and their accompanying illustration at our Expo in a few weeks.
